“To everything, there is a season, and a time to every purpose under Heaven.” Depending on where your roots grow, you may hear different versions of that passage. For some with a biblical bent, you may know it from the Book of Ecclesiastes. Others with a folk music background will know it as a song written by the legendary Pete Seeger in the late 1950’s. For me, I am reminded of the jangle of Roger McGuinn’s 12-string Rickenbacker guitar from the 1965 release by The Byrds. For those in the latter two categories, your brains have already filled in the “Turn! Turn! Turn” part. I don’t believe there were any background singers in the Bible, so the Bible folks probably didn’t hear that part. I bring all this up because it is now time to start this new venture.

This is the launch of my new blog called “This End Up”. It is a collection of my writings and drawings that have been incubating for decades. The drawings originated as scribbled notes on my kids’ lunch money envelopes during their school years. Those simple sketches became very popular among their fellow classmates, as well as with the lunch ladies. Some of the drawings even feature Lunch Ladies. Some of the recurring characters you’ll get to know include Lunchroom Superhero Chicken Patty, Lazlo the Giant, Og the Caveman, and the caped crusader of lesser fame, Above-average Man.

The writings will vary in topic and tone. Some will be more serious and some will be more amusing. Topics will range from social and political commentary to music to observational humor to the philosophical to racism in America. It is a mixed pot that has been simmering for over fifty years. All of it is presented with a little bit of a twist and with a hopeful slant.

I believe that the messages and meanings contained in this blog are what our world needs now. The time for renewal has come, for both the world and for myself. I want this to be a place where you can stop in and find something to laugh about, or maybe find some insight, or have your own thoughts fortified. In any case, the light will always be on and you are welcome any time to come in and look around. In a world that can often spin out of control, it will always be my goal to keep this end up.
